Lei Yue Mun Events Calendar 2027
Every 2027 date that is fixed in and around Lei Yue Mun, month by month. Some of them cannot move: the lunar temple days, the gazetted public holidays and the dragon-boat World Championships an international federation has already awarded to Kwun Tong Promenade. The rest — processions, opera runs, district fairs — are announced weeks before they happen, and where a 2027 programme is not yet published, this page says so rather than guessing a date.
If you are here for one day of the year, make it 29 April: the village's Tin Hau festival at its own temple, with the pilgrimage to Joss House Bay falling on the same day.
The dates to plan around
- 31 January – 9 February — the district's Lunar New Year fair at Kwun Tong Recreation Ground, then New Year's Eve in the village on the 5th and four holiday days after it.
- 29 April — Tin Hau's birthday at the village's Tin Hau Temple and the same day at Joss House Bay.
- 10–14 May — Cheung Chau Bun Festival, main day Thursday 13 May.
- 13 May — Tam Kung's birthday, Shau Kei Wan.
- 8–9 June — Tai O's water parade, then Tuen Ng on the 9th with Aberdeen's races.
- 14–16 September — Tai Hang fire dragon, with Mid-Autumn on the 15th.
- 17–24 October — 18th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championships, Kwun Tong Promenade.
January 2027
January belongs to the district rather than the village: an opera demonstration in the Domain mall at Yau Tong, and the seven-day Lunar New Year fair at Kwun Tong Recreation Ground, which stays open through the night before Lunar New Year. Nothing in the village itself is published for January.
Cantonese Opera Demonstration — Eighteen Arts, Kwun Tong Community Arts Scheme
📅 Saturday 9 January 2027 · 2:30–4 pm
An interactive demonstration by the children's and teenagers' Cantonese-opera training troupe of the district's Eighteen Arts community arts scheme, in the ground-floor atrium of the Domain mall at Yau Tong. It runs 90 minutes and admission is free. An introduction to the art form the village stages in its own scaffold theatre in late May — enough to find out whether you want a whole evening of it.

Kwun Tong Lunar New Year Fair 2027
📅 Sunday 31 January – Saturday 6 February 2027 · seven days, trading through the night of 5 February until 7 am on 6 February
The district's Lunar New Year fair: 50 wet-goods stalls, 34 dry-goods stalls and 5 fast-food stalls at Kwun Tong Recreation Ground. Free entry. Go after midnight on the 5th, when the stalls are still trading and you can walk the aisles instead of shuffling through them at noon.

February 2027
The year turns on the night of 5 February: the twelfth lunar month runs 29 days rather than 30, so New Year's Eve falls on the 29th and the reunion dinner with it. New Year's Day is the 6th.
Lunar New Year's Eve in the Village
📅 Friday 5 February 2027 · 12th lunar month, day 29
The reunion meal, kept at home and in the seafood houses along Hoi Pong Road. Customary observance: there is no organiser, no programme and no house publishes its holiday closing dates — the kitchens arrange that themselves. Book before you go: the year turns at the table, and the meal is the whole of the night.

Lunar New Year in the Village
📅 Saturday 6 – Tuesday 9 February 2027 · general holidays 6, 7, 8 and 9 February; the 4th day is a substitute because the 2nd falls on a Sunday
Lion and unicorn troupes work the seafood houses for 採青, the year's first incense is offered at the Tin Hau Temple and visiting boats fill the harbour. For four days the village performs itself — troupes going shop to shop, boats in from the water — and because the 4th day is a substitute holiday, the run lasts to Tuesday.

March 2027
Two temple dates, both set by the lunar calendar: Kwun Yam's treasury opens at Cha Kwo Ling on the 3rd, and Hung Shing's birthday is kept at Ap Lei Chau on the 20th. Neither has a published programme — the date is the observance.
Kwun Yam Treasury Opening (觀音開庫)
📅 Wednesday 3 March 2027 · 1st lunar month, day 26
The day the treasury is opened, kept at a list of venues that includes the Tin Hau Temple at Cha Kwo Ling — the temple whose deity is invited over to Lei Yue Mun's own Tin Hau festival in April. Date fixed by the lunar calendar; there is no programme to publish. It falls on an ordinary Wednesday, and that is the draw: a working temple mid-week, the observance without a festival around it.
📍 Tin Hau Temple, Cha Kwo Ling
Hung Shing Festival (洪聖誕)
📅 Saturday 20 March 2027 · 2nd lunar month, day 13
The sea-god's birthday, kept by the fishing community at the Hung Shing Temple on Ap Lei Chau with a procession and Cantonese opera; the 2027 programme is to be confirmed. The harbour custom is kept too: racing dragon boats pass the temple channel three times, as if bowing to Hung Shing, before they race. Date fixed by the lunar calendar. The procession belongs to the community and the opera to the observance rather than to a ticket — you are a guest at somebody's festival, not a customer.

April 2027
The village's own festival is the 29th, and the territory's oldest Tin Hau pilgrimage falls on the same day across the water at Joss House Bay. The date is fixed by the lunar calendar; neither celebration has a published 2027 programme.
Tin Hau Festival — Lei Yue Mun Tin Hau Temple
📅 Thursday 29 April 2027 · 3rd lunar month, day 23
The goddess's birthday at the village temple: the Hakka unicorn dance, the first offerings and the offerings taken round the temple forecourt on a trolley instead of the congregation going down on its knees, with the deities of Cha Kwo Ling's Tin Hau Temple and Shau Kei Wan's Tam Kung Temple invited over to join. The Cantonese-opera run that belongs to the festival — a scaffold theatre, four days and five nights — is staged in the fourth lunar month, which in 2027 means late May; those dates are not yet confirmed. Date fixed by the lunar calendar. Come for the birthday itself: the trolley is particular to this village.
📍 Tin Hau Temple, Ma Wan Tsuen, Lei Yue Mun
Tin Hau Festival — Joss House Bay (大廟)
📅 Thursday 29 April 2027 · 3rd lunar month, day 23
The same birthday at Hong Kong's oldest and largest Tin Hau temple, declared a monument in 2023, with tens of thousands of worshippers arriving on foot over the High Junk Peak trail and by boat into the bay. The North Point ferry to the temple pier runs only on the eve and on the day of the festival. The other end of the scale from the village, and worth the effort: this is a place people set out for, not one they drop into.
📍 Joss House Bay (Tai Miu), Clear Water Bay
May 2027
The village's opera run belongs to the fourth lunar month — late May in 2027, dates to be confirmed — and that month also carries the Bun Festival on Cheung Chau (10–14 May) and Tam Kung's birthday at Shau Kei Wan on the 13th.
Cheung Chau Bun Festival (長洲太平清醮)
📅 Monday 10 – Friday 14 May 2027 · 4th lunar month, days 5–9; main day Thursday 13 May
Five days of jiao, with the island vegetarian for the festival period, the Piu Sik parade of costumed children on the main day and the midnight bun scramble at the Pak Tai Temple playground. The main day is the gazetted Buddha's Birthday. Date fixed by the lunar calendar. The vegetarian days are easy to miss, and Thursday itself ends with the scramble — the strangest hour of the Hong Kong year.
📍 Cheung Chau, village-wide; Pak Tai Temple playground
Tam Kung Festival (譚公誕)
📅 Thursday 13 May 2027 · 4th lunar month, day 8 — also the gazetted Buddha's Birthday
The sea-god's birthday at the Shau Kei Wan temple: a parade up Main Street East to the temple with lion and dragon teams and Cantonese opera. In 2026 the festival ran nine days around this date; the 2027 programme is to be confirmed. Date fixed by the lunar calendar. A street procession rather than a ticketed set piece — the watching is done from the pavement, and the temple is at the end of it.
📍 Tam Kung Temple, Shau Kei Wan
June 2027
Tuen Ng falls on Wednesday 9 June, and both of the festival's water events are that week: Aberdeen's races on the day itself and Tai O's parade, which begins on the 8th and is a ritual rather than a race.
Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade (大澳龍舟遊涌)
📅 Tuesday 8 – Wednesday 9 June 2027 · 5th lunar month, days 4–5
On the 4th day the village associations row to four temples to collect the deities of Yeung Hau, Tin Hau, Kwan Tai and Hung Shing; on Tuen Ng the statues are carried on sacred sampans towed by dragon boats through the stilt-house channels. A national intangible cultural heritage since 2011. Go both days, not just the 9th — the racing is an add-on to a procession, and the procession is the thing.
📍 Tai O, Lantau
Aberdeen Dragon Boat Races
📅 Wednesday 9 June 2027 · Tuen Ng
Aberdeen's races are among the oldest in Hong Kong — more than 100 years on this water — rowed in the typhoon shelter by fishing crews in standard boats and in long boats carrying 50 paddlers. The date is set by the gazetted Tuen Ng festival; the 2027 race programme is to be confirmed. The fishing-community end of the sport: the harbour's own crews racing their own water, on a 400-metre course.
📍 Aberdeen Promenade, Aberdeen Praya Road
July 2027
July carries one date, and it is the trade council's rather than the village's: HKTDC World of Snacks at the Convention Centre, 14–20 July, on the same ticket as the Book Fair. Nothing in the village itself is published for July.
HKTDC World of Snacks 2027
📅 Wednesday 14 – Tuesday 20 July 2027
The trade council's public snack-and-food fair, run alongside the Hong Kong Book Fair, with one ticket covering both. The packaged end of the trade the village works at the live end of: the same business, boxed and branded, in the same building as the Book Fair.
📍 Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai
August 2027
August has one published date: the HKTDC Food Expo at the Convention Centre, 12–16 August. The village has nothing published for August.
HKTDC Food Expo 2027
📅 Thursday 12 – Monday 16 August 2027 · trade-only Food Expo PRO 12–14 August
The trade council's public food fair, with the trade-only PRO floor running alongside it for the first three days. The one fair here where the trade floor and the public floor run at once: three days of PRO from the 12th, with the public halls open alongside rather than after.
📍 Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai
September 2027
Mid-Autumn falls on Wednesday 15 September, with the public holiday the day after, and the fire dragon runs the three nights around it.
Mid-Autumn on the Lei Yue Mun Waterfront
📅 Wednesday 15 September 2027 · 8th lunar month, day 15; public holiday Thursday 16 September
Lanterns on the promenade and viewing decks, the moon over the water. There is no organiser, no programme and nothing to book. The village keeps this one itself: eat on Hoi Pong Road, then stay out for the moon.
📍 Lei Yue Mun promenade and Hoi Pong Road
Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance (大坑舞火龍)
📅 Tuesday 14 – Thursday 16 September 2027 · 8th lunar month, nights 14–16
A 67-metre straw dragon studded with more than 12,000 burning incense sticks, carried through the back streets of Tai Hang by some 300 performers on the three nights of the festival. Free to watch; the dance starts in the evening on Wun Sha Street. Date fixed by the lunar calendar. Street level and unticketed: watch it on the first night, because there is no second chance after Mid-Autumn.
📍 Tai Hang, Causeway Bay (Wun Sha Street)
October 2027
October has one date, and it is the year's longest: the 18th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championships at Kwun Tong Promenade, eight days from the 17th. It is also the only 2027 date here that an international federation published more than a year ahead.
18th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championships
📅 Sunday 17 – Sunday 24 October 2027
The world championships, hosted by the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association at Kwun Tong Promenade: national teams from the federation's member associations over eight days. The village's trade and the world championship on the same water: an international final rowed where the village still fishes.
📍 Kwun Tong Promenade, Kwun Tong
November 2027
No date is published for November 2027 yet. The district office's activity list runs only into January 2027, the trade council's published 2027 fair calendar stops on 8–11 September and the village publishes no programme of its own. When a November date is published, it will appear here.
December 2027
Two dates the village keeps itself: Kwun Yam's sea-goddess day on the 16th and the winter solstice dinner on the 22nd.
Kwun Yam Festival — the Sea-Goddess Day (觀音誕)
📅 Thursday 16 December 2027 · 11th lunar month, day 19
The last of the year's four Kwun Yam days and the one that reads her as a sea goddess — 入海成水神, the day she enters the sea. It is kept at the Shau Kei Wan Tin Hau Temple and at Ap Lei Chau's Shui Yuet Kung, both on the Chinese Temples Committee's list of venues for the day. Date fixed by the lunar calendar. The halls are the draw, and the observance is the whole of it.
📍 Shau Kei Wan Tin Hau Temple; Shui Yuet Kung, Ap Lei Chau
Winter Solstice Dinner in the Village (冬至)
📅 Wednesday 22 December 2027 · Winter Solstice
冬至, the Cantonese family reunion meal, kept at home and in the village's seafood houses. Customary observance: no organiser, no programme and no house publishes its hours. The meal is the point, and in this village the larder is a live-tank restaurant — book the table rather than turn up.
📍 Hoi Pong Road, Lei Yue Mun
Questions people ask about the 2027 calendar
When is Lei Yue Mun's own Tin Hau festival?
Thursday 29 April 2027 — the 23rd day of the third lunar month, and the goddess's birthday at the village's Tin Hau Temple. The Cantonese opera that goes with the festival is staged in the fourth lunar month, which in 2027 means late May; those dates have not been published.
Which of these are free?
Several of the dates here cost nothing: the Cantonese-opera demonstration at Domain on 9 January, the Lunar New Year fair and the Tai Hang fire dragon, which is watched from the street. The two HKTDC fairs at the Convention Centre are ticketed, and the July one shares its ticket with the Book Fair.
How do I get to the village?
On the MTR to Yau Tong, Exit A2, then along Cha Kwo Ling Road to Lei Yue Mun Path — the Tourism Board gives the walk as about 15 minutes. By water, the Sai Wan Ho–Sam Ka Tsuen ferry takes about 10 minutes and costs HK$9 adult single.
Why do some entries say the programme is to be confirmed?
A lunar festival's date is fixed years ahead; the programme around it is not. A district office or a trade council publishes months ahead, and a village festival is decided by the kaifong — the village's own association — weeks before it happens. So this page prints the date that is certain, and says plainly where the rest is not published yet.
