Stilt Houses

Stilt Houses

Lei Yue Mun is one of the few places in Hong Kong where you can still see the Stilt Houses or "Pang Uk" or 棚屋.

This is a traditional form of house developed by fishing peoples when they moved onto the land, but wanted to maintain the feel and advantages of living on a boat.

Traditionally they are wooden structures that are started on the land but extend out and over the water and are supported by wooden beams that go down into the river or sea bed.  Today however they are often concrete reinforced structures which maintain the shape and benefits of the traditional Stilt House while offering a stronger and safer foundation.
